The Rune Stave: Thorn

Number: 3

Phonetic Value: Th

Word: Thurs

Planetary: Jupiter (active)

Element/s: Fire

Deity/ies Thor

Modern Translation: Thorn

Memory Keys:

Word/Concept: T is for trouble taken in your stride.

Stave: Thors hammer (mollijner) laying on its side,
and the thorn from a rose bush.

Word/Concept: If you read the myths about Thor, he
is shown as a large, strong, but noticeably
thoughtless god who always gets himself
into trouble, and has to use his trusty war
hammer to get him out of it. It is not
surprising that his hammer was worn as
a talisman for Protection and Defense
for this reason, this rune means exactly the
same - protection from ones own folly,
when you are un-able to influence the
situation for yourself. This can sometimes
be seen as 'luck'or the gods
smiling on you (particularly Thor), but
it is also the ability to circumvent problems
before they become out of control. In this
case it is best to look at this rune as the
thorn of the rose bush; the temptation is
to pick the bloom because of its beauty,
but the thorn warns against such an action,
unless you wish to risk injury. This rune
can therefore also be seen as one of Warning.
