Word/Concept: 'Feoh' is the ancient root source in English
of the word Fee. Like many tribal cultures
today, livestock and cattle were seen as a
sign of wealth. If you had cattle you would
never starve; you had a source of meat and
dairy products and the ability if you were
good at animal husbandry to increase your
herd, and therefore your wealth. To maintain
your herd also meant having to work hard if
you were going to protect them from wild
predators, disease and inclement weather;
therefore the benefits of keeping cattle was
earned wealth.
You could of course forgo any hard work and
slaughter the cattle or barter them for
goods. This was of course an important
decision to make and fraught with
difficulty; 'What would the Winter be like;
if I sell them now would my faimly be
without food for the seaon/', 'If I don't
sell now, what would the cattle be worth
during the Winter
The Rune 'Feoh' means exactly this earned
wealth from investment and time; and the
ability to know when to use an investment
wisely.
Not surprisingly, it has become associated
with coming in to something due to fortune;
but something has to be done to allow this
to happen - you aren't going to win the
lottery if you don't buy a ticket!
