North American Raccoon (Procyon Lotor)

A History of Our Raccoons

RaccoonWe currently have three Raccoons in the Sanctuary; to say the least, they are an odd animal to find in Ireland. They were originally kept as pets until they became unmanagable by their owner.

Lively, inquisitive and versatile, Raccoons have adapted well to the dramatic changes inflicted on the North American countryside. They are already spreading through Europe, where they first became established in the wild as a result of escapes from captivity in Germany.

Their diet is mainly vegetarian, but includes a wide variety of animal food - eggs, frogs, fish, crayfish rodents etc.
