Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

A History of Our Foxes

Fox CubOur three foxes were rescued as cubs; one is blind. It is not unusual in Ireland to find cubs orphaned due to the high incidence of Vixens killed on the roads, and as an effect of hunting. It is likely that these three cubs will end up in private woodland, protected by a sympathetic landowner, as it is almost impossible to return semi-domesticated Foxes to the wild.

Within the dog family Foxes and Wolves are, in many ways, at opposite ends of the spectrum. Foxes are small, they hunt alone rather than in packs, and they are adapted to feeding at night on small prey. These factors alone with their renowned cunning and versatility, have enable Red Foxes to adapt well to changes in the environment, even in cities and industrial areas.

Foxes feed mainly on rodents and a den of hungry cubs - there may be as many as ten in a litter - can consume an enormous quantity of rats or voles.
